PlatePal vs Yuka
Yuka and PlatePal both scan barcodes, but they answer different questions. Yuka is a popular app that rates how healthy a product is. PlatePal checks whether a product fits your faith, lifestyle, and allergen requirements, and gives one eligibility verdict. If you want a health grade, Yuka is a great fit. If you want faith plus allergen checking with free allergen alerts, PlatePal is built for that.

Does Yuka check halal?
No. Yuka scores products on nutrition, additives and organic labelling, and its help centre describes no halal, kosher or religious-diet setting (checked 2026-09-24). A Yuka score of 90 says nothing about gelatin source, rennet or alcohol in flavourings. PlatePal checks those against a halal or kosher profile and your allergens in one scan. Try the free web version on the product checker, or read how the app handles gelatin on is gelatin halal. If you want an app built for halal, the best halal scanner app comparison covers the dedicated options alongside PlatePal.
When Yuka is the better fit
If your main goal is judging nutritional quality and additives, or scanning cosmetics, Yuka's health score is purpose-built for that and is widely used.
When PlatePal is the better fit
If you keep halal or kosher, stack several requirements, or want allergen alerts without a subscription, PlatePal centers exactly that. Both apps are ad-free, so the difference is focus, not privacy.
