Do Rice Krispies Treats have pork gelatin?
Possibly, yes: Kellogg's own written statement says beef or pork gelatin may be used in all varieties of Rice Krispies Treats bars, depending on what is available at the time of manufacture. The bars list plain "gelatin" in the marshmallow layer. The box does not say which one is inside yours. Plain Rice Krispies cereal, by contrast, has no gelatin at all. Here is what the label and Kellogg's own letter actually say.
ConcernsKellogg's Rice Krispies Treats Original Bars, US, Kellanova
Rice Krispies Treats bars are not halal or kosher by default: the marshmallow layer contains gelatin, and Kellogg's own letter says the source may be beef or pork depending on supply.
- The current ingredient list names the marshmallow component as corn syrup, sugar, gelatin and natural and artificial flavor.
- Kellogg's written response to a gelatin inquiry states beef or pork gelatin may be used in all varieties of Rice Krispies Treats bars, without committing to one source.
- No halal or kosher certification mark appears on a standard US box.

The evidence: what is in the box, and what Kellogg says
The current ingredient list for Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats Original Bars, read from Open Food Facts' record for the UPC on this box and matched against the product's own labeling, is: toasted rice cereal (rice, sugar, salt, malt flavoring and added vitamins), marshmallow (corn syrup, sugar, gelatin, natural and artificial flavor), fructose, margarine (vegetable oil, water, a butter flavor that contains milk, DATEM, acetylated monoglycerides, BHT and added vitamins), corn syrup solids, and 2% or less of dextrose, glycerin, salt, more added vitamins and soy lecithin. The label's own contains statement names gelatin, milk and soybeans directly.
Gelatin only enters through the marshmallow. Kellogg addressed exactly this point in a written response to a customer inquiry about gelatin in its Away From Home products, dated January 4, 2023: "Beef or pork gelatin may be used in all varieties of Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats bars, including Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats made with Whole Grain bars." The same letter states plainly that product information is subject to change without notice and that the list it gives is not all-inclusive. It goes on to name a fixed source for two other products, beef gelatin for Pop-Tarts icing and for Frosted Mini-Wheats cereal, which makes the Rice Krispies Treats answer stand out: Kellogg had the chance to commit to one animal source here and chose not to, because the actual source varies with what is available in the marketplace at manufacturing time. That same letter is the main source behind are Pop Tarts halal, which breaks the frosted flavors down flavor by flavor.
That is the core problem this page exists to explain. US and EU labeling rules require gelatin to be named as an ingredient, but never require the species to be disclosed, and Kellogg's own letter shows that even the manufacturer's answer is a range rather than a fixed fact. See is gelatin halal for how pork, beef and fish gelatin are judged differently once a source is known.
Do Rice Krispies have gelatin?
No, plain Rice Krispies cereal has no gelatin. It is a different product from the treats bars, made today by WK Kellogg Co rather than Kellanova, following the 2023 split of the original Kellogg Company. Its current ingredient list, taken directly from the brand's own product page, is short: rice, sugar, and 2% or less of salt and malt flavor, plus added iron and B vitamins. There is no gelatin anywhere in that list. A bowl of plain Rice Krispies with milk carries none of the gelatin question that applies to the marshmallow bars.
A related but discontinued product sometimes causes confusion: Rice Krispies Treats cereal, a marshmallow-coated cereal distinct from both the plain cereal and the treats bars, is no longer made. Kellogg's own account confirmed the discontinuation directly to a fan asking about it, and pointed people toward Frosted Krispies or Cocoa Krispies instead. Older claims online about that discontinued cereal's gelatin being beef-sourced describe a product that is no longer on shelves, and should not be read onto the Rice Krispies Treats bars sold today.
A homemade, halal or kosher-friendly alternative
Since the cereal itself is gelatin-free, the entire question comes down to the marshmallow. Making treats at home with plain Rice Krispies cereal and a halal-certified or gelatin-free marshmallow removes the gelatin concern completely. Ziyad sells a marshmallow product labeled halal by the brand, and Dandies makes a gelatin-free marshmallow that also carries a kosher claim, though neither brand's certifying body was confirmed on the pages we could check, so look for the printed mark on the bag you buy. Stacked verdict: halal, kosher, vegetarian, vegan and allergens
A generic box of Rice Krispies Treats bars fails more than one profile for the same underlying reason: an unnamed animal gelatin plus a stated milk ingredient. PlatePal checks all of these together instead of making you research each one separately.
| Profile | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Halal | Concerns | The marshmallow layer contains gelatin, and Kellogg's own letter on the topic says beef or pork gelatin may be used, depending on availability. Treat an unmarked box as pork-possible by default unless a halal mark says otherwise. |
| Kosher | Concerns | Same gelatin problem. The bars carry no hechsher and no fixed stated source, so they are not kosher by default. |
| Vegetarian | Concerns | Gelatin, whatever the animal, is not vegetarian. Rice Krispies Treats bars are not suitable. |
| Vegan | Concerns | Same reason as vegetarian, and the bars also contain milk from the margarine's butter flavor. |
| Allergens | Concerns | The label declares gelatin, milk and soybeans. Soy lecithin and a butter flavor containing milk are both in the ingredient list, alongside the gelatin itself. |
Frequently asked questions
Is there pork in Rice Krispie Treats?
Possibly, yes. The marshmallow layer in Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats bars lists plain "gelatin," and Kellogg's own written statement on the subject says beef or pork gelatin may be used, without committing to one source, because it depends on which is available in the marketplace at the time of manufacture. There is no way to tell pork from beef gelatin by reading the ingredient panel alone, so the honest answer for a box in your pantry is that pork is possible, not confirmed and not ruled out.
Are Rice Krispies Treats halal?
Not by default. Because the gelatin source is not fixed and the box carries no halal certification mark, PlatePal calls standard US Rice Krispies Treats bars a concern rather than likely OK. A halal-suitable version would need either a certified box or a homemade batch made with a halal-certified marshmallow and plain Rice Krispies cereal, which itself contains no gelatin.
What does Kellogg's actually say about the gelatin source?
In a written response to a customer inquiry about gelatin in its Away From Home products, dated January 4, 2023, Kellogg states: "Beef or pork gelatin may be used in all varieties of Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats bars, including Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats made with Whole Grain bars." The same letter notes that product information is subject to change without notice and that it is not an all-inclusive list, and it separately confirms that Kellogg's Frosted Mini-Wheats cereal and Pop-Tarts icing use beef gelatin specifically. Rice Krispies Treats bars are the one product on that letter where Kellogg does not commit to a single animal source.
Do Rice Krispies have gelatin?
No. Plain Rice Krispies cereal, made today by WK Kellogg Co, lists just rice, sugar, and 2% or less of salt and malt flavor, plus added vitamins and minerals. There is no gelatin anywhere in that recipe. Gelatin only enters the picture with the marshmallow bars, not the cereal itself, so a bowl of plain Rice Krispies with milk carries none of this concern.
What happened to Rice Krispies Treats cereal, the marshmallow-coated version?
It was discontinued. Kellogg's own account confirmed on social media that Rice Krispies Treats cereal, a marshmallow-coated cereal distinct from both plain Rice Krispies and the Rice Krispies Treats bars, is no longer made, and pointed fans toward Frosted Krispies or Cocoa Krispies instead. Older forum posts describing that discontinued cereal's gelatin as beef-sourced predate Kellogg's 2023 letter and should not be read onto the bars sold today.
Are Rice Krispies Treats kosher?
Not by default. Standard US boxes carry no OU, OK, Star-K or other kosher symbol, and Kellogg's own gelatin letter does not name a certifier for either the beef or pork gelatin it says may be used. Gelatin is one of the ingredients that most reliably needs a hechsher on the actual package rather than a general brand assumption.
How can I make halal or kosher Rice Krispies treats at home?
Swap the marshmallows. Plain Rice Krispies cereal itself has no gelatin, so a homemade batch made with a halal-certified marshmallow, such as the ones sold by Ziyad, or a certified kosher or gelatin-free marshmallow like Dandies, removes the entire gelatin question. See "is gelatin halal" for how beef, pork and fish gelatin are treated differently, and "do marshmallows contain pork" for a fuller list of marshmallow brands and their stated gelatin sources.

Allergens. PlatePal screens ingredient data, so this page is information and not medical advice. A recipe can change before the data does, and shared equipment never appears in an ingredient list. Always read the label on the package in your hand, and follow your allergist or doctor over any app.
Religious status. A screening result is not a religious ruling. Certifiers and schools of thought differ, and PlatePal does not rank them. For anything you hold yourself strictly to, ask a qualified authority or the certifier you already follow.
