Are M&M's halal?
M&M'S sold in the US, Milk Chocolate, Peanut, Peanut Butter and Crispy, have no pork, gelatin, carmine or alcohol in their current ingredient lists. Mars does not certify any of them as halal, and its own FAQ says so directly. The UK recipe adds an ingredient the US recipe skips entirely. Here is the label, checked line by line, plus what changes by country.
Likely OKM&M'S Milk Chocolate, Peanut, Peanut Butter and Crispy, US bags
Yes, M&M's sold in the US are halal: no pork, gelatin or carmine in any of the four varieties, though Mars does not certify them and other countries' recipes differ.
- No pork, gelatin, animal rennet, carmine or alcohol in the current US ingredient list for any of the four varieties.
- Mars's own M&M'S FAQ states the candies are not certified halal, and separately confirms there are no pork-based ingredients. The same FAQ also says they are not certified kosher, which the OU's live database contradicts.
- The glaze is carnauba wax, a plant wax, not the insect-derived shellac some other candies use.

What's in M&M's? Four US bags, read line by line
M&M'S Milk Chocolate: milk chocolate (sugar, chocolate, skim milk, cocoa butter, lactose, milkfat, soy lecithin, salt, artificial flavors), sugar, cornstarch, and less than 1% of corn syrup, gum acacia, coloring (red 40 lake, yellow 6, yellow 5, blue 2 lake, red 40, blue 1 lake, blue 1, blue 2, yellow 5 lake, yellow 6 lake), and dextrin. M&M'S Peanut adds whole peanuts to a similar milk chocolate base. M&M'S Peanut Butter swaps in a peanut butter layer (partially defatted peanuts, palm oil) plus hydrogenated palm kernel oil, carnauba wax and propyl gallate. M&M'S Crispy replaces the peanut layer with crisp rice made from rice flour, sugar, barley malt extract, salt, dextrose and mixed tocopherols, and adds PGPR to the chocolate.
Working through it for a halal profile: sugar, cocoa, skim milk, cornstarch and rice raise no questions on their own. Skim milk and milkfat are dairy, which most halal authorities accept without a certificate, since milk itself is not a slaughtered product. Soy lecithin, gum acacia and carnauba wax are plant-derived. PGPR, used in Crispy and Peanut Butter, is almost always made from castor oil rather than an animal fat. None of the nine color additives across the four US varieties is carmine or any other insect-derived dye. Nothing on any of the four lists is porcine, and nothing is derived from a slaughtered animal that would need to be zabiha. That is why PlatePal treats the US ingredients as likely OK.
Likely OK is not the same as certified. See is carmine halal for how the cochineal-derived red colorant is treated differently across halal authorities, since it shows up in other countries' M&M'S recipes even though it is absent from the US list.
Are M&M's halal certified?
Mars's own M&M'S FAQ is direct about it: "M&M'S are not certified as Halal or Kosher. However, they do not contain any pork-based ingredients." That is a narrower claim than a certification mark. It tells you what is not in the recipe, not that a named body inspected the supply chain. Mars has also told reporters that where it does produce halal-certified products, the packaging says so, and that it cannot offer further assurance beyond the printed ingredient list for products that are not certified. Reporting on Mars products more broadly describes halal-certified lines existing in some Muslim-majority markets, but we found no specific, fetchable certificate naming M&M'S by product for Malaysia, the UAE or Saudi Arabia, so treat any Middle East or Malaysia halal claim as unconfirmed until the mark is on the exact bag you are holding.
Are M&M's kosher?
Yes, M&M's sold in the US are kosher certified as OU-D dairy, with the symbol required on the package. The certifier settles this. The Orthodox Union's own product database, searched in a browser on 2026-09-27, returns 229 M&M'S listings under Mars Wrigley Confectionery, every one of them OU-D dairy, with the symbol required on the package and none kosher for Passover. The plain retail lines appear by name: M&M'S Milk Chocolate Candies, M&M'S Peanut Candies, Peanut Butter Chocolate Candies and MINIS Milk Chocolate Candies. The seasonal and licensed variants, from Halloween blends to the NASCAR and Disney park packs, carry the same OU-D status. Mars's consumer FAQ still says M&M'S are not certified kosher; where a brand FAQ and the certifier's live database disagree, the certifier is the record that matters. Kosher and halal are separate questions, so this does not change the halal answer above. Look for the printed OU-D symbol on the pack in your hand, since the OU listing requires it.
How other countries differ
| Country / edition | What we know |
|---|---|
| United States | No carmine. Milk Chocolate uses only synthetic lake colors (red 40, yellow 5, yellow 6, blue 1, blue 2). No halal certification mark confirmed on the standard bag. Kosher is certified: the OU database lists the US lines as OU-D dairy. |
| United Kingdom | UK M&M'S ingredient listings name carmine among the colors, alongside E100, E133, E160a, E160e and E170. Carmine is insect-derived, which some halal authorities and most vegetarians and vegans avoid. We could not confirm a UK halal certification mark. |
| Canada | A Canadian-market listing we checked uses tartrazine (E102) rather than carmine, closer to the US pattern than the UK one. No certification confirmed. |
| Malaysia and the Middle East | Mars states that where it certifies a product as halal, the packaging says so, and general reporting describes halal-certified Mars lines in some Muslim-majority markets. We found no specific, fetchable certificate naming M&M'S for these markets, so treat this as unconfirmed rather than certified. |
The takeaway is the one PlatePal repeats on every verdict page: a country-level pattern is not the bag in your hand. Scan the barcode on the exact pack you have. See the halal chocolate list for how M&M'S compares to Snickers, KitKat and other US chocolate on the shelf next to it.
Stacked verdict: halal, kosher, vegetarian, vegan and allergens
A candy can clear one requirement and fail another at the same time. M&M'S is a good example: the US ingredients read halal-suitable, but the same bag is not vegan and carries multiple declared allergens. PlatePal checks all of these on one scan instead of making you run separate apps.
| Profile | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Halal | Likely OK | No pork, gelatin, animal rennet, carmine or alcohol in the current US ingredient lists for Milk Chocolate, Peanut, Peanut Butter or Crispy. Mars does not certify any of them, so this is likely OK rather than certified. |
| Kosher | Certified | Certified OU-D. The OU's own product database, searched in a browser on 2026-09-27, returns 229 M&M'S records under Mars Wrigley Confectionery, all of them OU-D dairy, including the plain retail lines: M&M'S Milk Chocolate Candies, M&M'S Peanut Candies, Peanut Butter Chocolate Candies and MINIS Milk Chocolate Candies. Every listing says the symbol is required on the package and none is kosher for Passover. That contradicts Mars's own FAQ, so trust the printed OU-D mark on your bag. |
| Vegetarian | Likely OK | No gelatin or other meat-derived ingredient in the current US lists. The glaze is carnauba wax, a plant wax, not the insect-derived shellac some candies use. Mars's own FAQ calls M&M'S generally suitable for vegetarians. |
| Vegan | Concerns | Milk chocolate, skim milk, milkfat and lactose are dairy in every US variety. Not suitable for a vegan diet. |
| Allergens | Concerns | All four US varieties contain milk and soy. Peanut and Peanut Butter add peanuts as a named ingredient, and Crispy's rice base uses barley malt extract, adding gluten. Mars states any variety may contain tree nuts. |
Frequently asked questions
Is M&M's halal in the USA?
The current US ingredient lists for Milk Chocolate, Peanut, Peanut Butter and Crispy have no pork, gelatin, animal rennet, carmine or alcohol, so nothing in any of the four recipes is haram. Mars does not certify M&M'S as halal in the US, so PlatePal calls the US range likely OK rather than certified. Mars's own FAQ states plainly that M&M'S are not certified halal, and separately confirms there are no pork-based ingredients.
Is M&M's halal or haram?
Neither word fits perfectly for the standard US bag. Haram would mean the recipe contains something forbidden, and it does not. Halal usually implies certification, and Mars does not certify the US range. The honest answer is that the US ingredients are halal-suitable, while certification is a separate question that changes by country, and the UK recipe adds an ingredient the US recipe does not use.
Do M&M's contain pork or gelatin?
No. None of the four US ingredient lists we checked, Milk Chocolate, Peanut, Peanut Butter or Crispy, name pork, gelatin or any other slaughtered-animal ingredient. Mars's own FAQ states M&M'S do not contain any pork-based ingredients.
Are M&M's kosher?
Yes, as OU-D dairy. The Orthodox Union's own product database, searched in a browser on 2026-09-27, returns 229 M&M'S listings under Mars Wrigley Confectionery in Hackettstown, New Jersey, and every one of them is OU-D. The plain retail lines are in there by name: M&M'S Milk Chocolate Candies, M&M'S Peanut Candies, Peanut Butter Chocolate Candies and MINIS Milk Chocolate Candies. Each record says the symbol is required on the package and none is kosher for Passover. Mars's own consumer FAQ still says M&M'S are not certified kosher, which the certifier's live database contradicts, so go by the printed OU-D symbol on the back of your bag. OU-D means dairy, so M&M'S cannot be eaten with a meat meal.
Do M&M's contain alcohol?
Not as a named ingredient. None of the four US ingredient lists list alcohol, wine or a spirit-based extract. "Artificial and natural flavors" is not broken down further on the label, which is true of almost any packaged candy.
Are M&M's vegan?
No. Every US variety lists milk chocolate, skim milk, milkfat or lactose, which is dairy. There is no gelatin, and the glaze is plant-based carnauba wax rather than animal-derived shellac, but the milk content alone rules out a vegan diet.
Are M&M's halal certified in Malaysia or the Middle East?
Some editions are, based on Mars's own public statements that where it produces halal-certified products the packaging says so, and on reporting that Mars runs halal-certified lines in some Muslim-majority markets. We could not find a specific, fetchable certificate naming M&M'S by product in Malaysia or the Gulf, so treat any Middle East or Malaysia claim as unconfirmed until you see a printed halal mark on the exact bag in your hand.
Does the UK M&M's recipe differ from the US recipe?
Yes, in a way that matters for a halal or vegetarian read. UK M&M'S ingredient listings name carmine among the colours, alongside E100, E133, E160a, E160e and E170. Carmine, also called E120, comes from the cochineal insect and is covered in full on our carmine page. The current US Milk Chocolate list uses only synthetic lake colours, Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1 and Blue 2, with no carmine at all. The country you buy in changes the answer here, not just the certification.
What this page is not
Allergens. PlatePal screens ingredient data, so this page is information and not medical advice. A recipe can change before the data does, and shared equipment never appears in an ingredient list. Always read the label on the package in your hand, and follow your allergist or doctor over any app.
Religious status. A screening result is not a religious ruling. Certifiers and schools of thought differ, and PlatePal does not rank them. For anything you hold yourself strictly to, ask a qualified authority or the certifier you already follow.
