Is KitKat halal?

KitKat is not one product with one answer. Nestle licenses it to Hershey in the US and makes it directly in the UK, the EU, Japan and Malaysia, and each market's recipe, certification and even manufacturer differ. The US and UK standard bars list no gelatin or alcohol, Malaysia's locally made bars carry a named JAKIM certificate, and Japan's emulsifier source and alcohol-flavored variants keep that market a genuinely open question. Here is each market, checked separately.

Likely OKKitKat Milk Chocolate, US (Hershey licence) and UK/EU (Nestle) standard bars

Yes, KitKat sold in the US (Hershey) and UK/EU (Nestle) reads as halal-suitable: no gelatin or alcohol in the standard bar, though neither is certified, and Japan and Malaysia are different questions entirely.

  • No gelatin, animal rennet or alcohol in either the US or the standard UK/EU ingredient list.
  • The US bar carries an OU-D kosher mark through Hershey, but neither the US nor the UK bar carries a halal certification mark.
  • Malaysia is certified separately: Nestle Malaysia's own press release names KIT KAT as JAKIM halal certified for locally made bars.
  • Japan is the exception that matters most: the emulsifier source is undisclosed and some flavors contain alcohol.

The evidence: what each market's own materials say

United States (Hershey licence). Hershey has made KitKat in the US under license from Nestle since the 1970s. Hershey's own product page lists KIT KAT Milk Chocolate as: sugar, wheat flour, cocoa butter, chocolate, lactose (milk), vegetable oil (palm oil, palm kernel oil), skim milk, milk fat, and 2% or less of lecithin (soy), PGPR, vanillin (artificial flavor), salt, yeast and baking soda. The allergen statement declares milk, soy and wheat, and notes the bar is made on equipment that also processes peanuts. The wrapper carries an OU-D symbol, Hershey's kosher dairy certification through the Orthodox Union. Nothing on this list is porcine or alcohol-based.

United Kingdom and EU (Nestle). Nestle makes KitKat directly across the UK and EU. Ingredient listings we checked read: sugar, milk solids or skimmed milk powder, wheat flour, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, vegetable fat, emulsifiers (soy lecithin, E476), raising agent (sodium bicarbonate), salt, yeast and flavour. E476 is PGPR, an emulsifier almost always made from castor oil rather than an animal fat. No gelatin and no alcohol appear on this list either. We found no halal certification mark on a UK bar and no Nestle UK statement covering one, so a UK bar today should be treated as uncertified rather than certified.

MarketManufacturerHalal status
United StatesThe Hershey Company, under license from NestleNo gelatin or alcohol in the ingredient list. Not certified halal. Carries an OU-D kosher dairy mark.
United Kingdom / EUNestleNo gelatin or alcohol in the standard recipe. We found no halal certification mark or Nestle UK statement covering a UK bar, so treat current UK stock as uncertified.
JapanNestle JapanEmulsifier source is not disclosed on the pack, and reported statements from Nestle Japan's customer service have been inconsistent over the years, and we could not trace them to a Nestle Japan statement. Several regional and seasonal flavors use alcohol as a flavoring. Not halal certified. Treat the standard bar as Insufficient Data and alcohol-flavored variants as a concern.
MalaysiaNestle MalaysiaCertified. Nestle Malaysia's own press release names Nestle KIT KAT among the confectionery products that have received JAKIM halal certification, and states that all Nestle Malaysia confectionery is produced locally and JAKIM certified.
Middle EastVarious Nestle Middle East facilities, including Nestle Dubai ManufacturingNestle manufactures for the region locally, and its own press material describes KitKat products produced in the UAE. We could not find a certificate or a Nestle statement naming standard KitKat bars as halal certified for this region, so treat it as unconfirmed unless the wrapper itself carries a mark.

A country is not a barcode. A KitKat bought while travelling, or imported into a market that does not make it locally, can carry none of that market's certification even if the shelf sign says otherwise. Scan the wrapper you actually have. See are M&M'S halal for another Mars and Nestle-adjacent candy where the country of purchase changes the ingredient list, not just the certificate.

What the emulsifier and dairy questions come down to

Two ingredients do most of the work across every market's KitKat. Lactose, milk fat and skim milk are dairy, which most halal authorities accept without a certificate, since milk is not a slaughtered product; see is whey halal for how dairy derivatives are generally treated when a label does not spell out more detail. PGPR, labeled as E476 on UK and EU packs and simply as PGPR in the US, is an emulsifier (see is E476 halal) almost always sourced from castor oil, not an animal fat, in every market we could verify. Japan is the outlier precisely because its own manufacturer has not consistently named the emulsifier's source, which is the one gap none of the other markets we checked share.

Stacked verdict: halal, kosher, vegetarian, vegan and allergens

A chocolate bar can clear one requirement in one country and fail the same requirement two borders over. KitKat is the clearest example on this site: the US bar is kosher certified but not halal certified, Malaysia's bar is halal certified, and every standard market bar we checked is dairy, so none is vegan. PlatePal checks all of this on one scan instead of making you memorize a country list.

KitKat, US, UK/EU, Japan and Malaysia bars, checked 2026-09-13
ProfileVerdictWhy
HalalLikely OKFor the US (Hershey) and UK/EU (Nestle) standard bar: no gelatin or alcohol, but no certification either. Malaysia's locally made bars are JAKIM certified separately, and Japan's undisclosed emulsifier source and alcohol-flavored variants make that market a real concern, not a likely OK. Name your market before you answer.
KosherLikely OKThe US bar carries an OU-D kosher dairy mark through Hershey's long OU relationship. We could not confirm a kosher mark on UK, Japanese or other market bars, so treat this as a US-specific answer.
VegetarianLikely OKNo gelatin or meat-derived ingredient in the US or UK/EU standard recipes. Some alcohol-flavored Japanese variants use wine or spirit flavoring, which some vegetarians also avoid.
VeganConcernsMilk, milk fat or milk solids appear in every market's standard recipe we checked. Not suitable for a vegan diet.
AllergensConcernsUS and UK/EU bars declare milk, wheat and soy, with a peanut cross-contact warning in the US. Formulations and allergen statements differ by market, so read the wrapper you actually have.

Frequently asked questions

Is KitKat halal?

There is no single answer, because Nestle licenses KitKat to different manufacturers in different countries and the certification status changes market by market. The US bar, made by Hershey under license, and the UK and EU bars, made by Nestle, both list ingredients with no gelatin or alcohol, so nothing in those recipes is haram, but neither carries a halal certification mark. KitKat made in Malaysia by Nestle Malaysia is JAKIM certified. KitKat made in Japan is not certified, and some flavors there contain alcohol. Name your market before you trust any flat yes or no.

Is KitKat halal in Japan?

Treat standard Japanese KitKat as an open question rather than a yes. We found no halal certification for Nestle Japan's domestic KitKat production. Halal community reporting on customer-service responses over the years is inconsistent: one account describes Nestle Japan stating in 2023 that its products contain no animal-derived ingredients, while an earlier account describes Nestle Japan declining to confirm the emulsifier source. We could not trace either account to a published Nestle Japan statement. Several Japanese KitKat flavors, including sake and rum raisin variants, use alcohol as a flavoring ingredient, and standard and flavored bars can share production lines. PlatePal calls the standard bar Insufficient Data and treats alcohol-flavored variants as a clear concern.

Is KitKat halal certified?

Yes, in Malaysia specifically. Nestle Malaysia's own press release states that Nestle KIT KAT has received halal certification from JAKIM, Malaysia's Department of Islamic Development, and that all confectionery Nestle Malaysia produces and markets in Malaysia is made locally and JAKIM certified. That certification covers Kit Kat manufactured in Malaysia. It does not automatically extend to KitKat imported from Japan, the UK or elsewhere, since Nestle Malaysia's own materials describe imported stock as sitting outside that certification unless it carries the mark itself.

Is KitKat halal in Malaysia?

Locally made KitKat is. Nestle Malaysia's press release names Nestle KIT KAT directly as one of the confectionery products that has received JAKIM halal certification, alongside Nestle Crunch Wafer, Crunch Bar and Milo Nuggets. Nestle Malaysia describes itself as the largest halal producer in the Nestle Group globally, holding certification on more than 500 products. Look for the JAKIM mark on the wrapper to confirm the specific bar in your hand was made under that certification rather than imported.

Is KitKat kosher?

The US bar is. Hershey, which makes KitKat under license in the US, certifies its chocolate products through the Orthodox Union, and KitKat Milk Chocolate carries an OU-D mark, meaning kosher dairy. We could not confirm a kosher certification on UK, EU, Japanese or other market bars, so this answer is specific to the US Hershey-made product.

Does KitKat contain alcohol?

Not in the standard US or UK recipe we checked. Both list sugar, wheat flour, milk ingredients, cocoa butter, soy lecithin and a raising agent, with no alcohol named. Japan is the exception: several regional and seasonal flavors, including a sake KitKat and rum raisin variants, use alcohol as a flavoring, separate from the plain Original bar.

Is the UK KitKat different from the US KitKat?

The recipes are close but not identical, and the manufacturer is different. Nestle makes KitKat in the UK and across the EU. In the US, Hershey has made KitKat under license from Nestle since the 1970s, using its own supply chain. Both standard bars list sugar, wheat flour, milk ingredients, cocoa butter and soy lecithin with no gelatin, but the US bar carries a kosher OU-D mark that we did not find on the UK bar, and we found no halal certification mark or Nestle UK statement covering a UK bar, so treat a UK bar as uncertified.

Which KitKat bar should I trust as halal?

The one with a certification mark printed on it, not a general country reputation. Malaysia is the clearest case: Nestle Malaysia names KitKat directly in its own JAKIM certification statement. Everywhere else, including the US, UK, EU and most of the Middle East, a standard bar's ingredients read as halal-suitable but are not certified, and Japan adds real uncertainty through undisclosed emulsifier sourcing and alcohol-flavored variants. Scan the exact wrapper you are holding rather than assuming the country decides it for you.

Allergens. PlatePal screens ingredient data, so this page is information and not medical advice. A recipe can change before the data does, and shared equipment never appears in an ingredient list. Always read the label on the package in your hand, and follow your allergist or doctor over any app.

Religious status. A screening result is not a religious ruling. Certifiers and schools of thought differ, and PlatePal does not rank them. For anything you hold yourself strictly to, ask a qualified authority or the certifier you already follow.
